Volume 2 – Buggy the Clown
Best guess on publication year is 2003 actually since the survey at the back has that copyright in it
Overall, the theme of this volume is the Straw Hat Pirates’ definition of treasure versus more traditional pirate definitions of treasure. Volume 1 was about dreams and this is about the ‘treasures’ that will lead to or accompany or signify the accomplishment of dreams. In volume 1 we learned that Zoro’s swords were his treasures. In this volume, Luffy will identify his hat as his treasure. Mayor Boodle will identify the town and its people his treasures. Chou Chou will identify the pet store that had belonged to his deceased owner his treasure. In a small way, Mohji will see Richie as his treasure. Nami does not explicitly identify her treasure, but she says she only loves treasure (money) and mikans (the symbol of her treasure).
Buggy, on the other hand, explicitly defines treasure as gold and jewels. He also expresses an interest in power, stating that wealth can make one a king. I can’t remember if Buggy left Roger’s crew before Raftel or not. If not, this could be some the earliest foreshadowing of the true nature of the One Piece. In keeping with the tie between dreams and treasure, our heroes show that they are willing to fight to protect their treasures as the symbols of their dreams.
Chapter 9 Key Observations
- Luffy identifies his hat as his treasure
- Robber knows = Rubber nose – Buggy is so ridiculous
- Oda is really good at building tension. Buggy’s face isn’t shown full on and kept in shadows and then when he uses his power, the image draws back so far you can’t tell what’s actually happening (it almost looks like a Vader force choke)
- Nami: I’ve got to get a hundred million berries!! Then I’m going to buy a certain village! – Arlong Park foreshadowing
- OMG, Nami’s plan was to go to the Grand Line on her own to rob even bigger pirates. HOLY SHIT, that’s as crazy as Zoro and Luffy. TBH I had totally forgotten this. It makes her lack of resistance to the Grand Line make much more sense.
- Luffy finally reveals he’s a pirate and Nami’s whole demeanor change. She wants nothing to do with him and tricks him to take to Buggy as a prisoner.
Chapter 10 Key Observations
- Ok, so I’m pretty sure in the anime the Buggy crew is just hanging out like…by the docks. In the manga, they’ve taken over the town tavern – ‘The Drinker Pub’
- Nami wins her first drinking contest, in keeping with Oda establishing pirate traits, ie pirates love booze
- Nami: ‘He’s just a no good pirate but…if I murder him in cold blood, then I’ll be as bad as a pirate, too! (More Arlong Park foreshadowing)
- Luffy: It means being prepared to risk your own life! – what being prepared as a pirate means! Foreshadowing Zoro v Mihawk duel and Luffy in Logue Town
- Zoro arrives! LOL EVERYONE knows who Zoro is (at least by reputation!) He’s super famous in East Blue
Chapter 11 Key Observations
- Early Zoro’s giant forehead
- Zoro gets stabbed by Buggy (we meet him mildly wounded and then he gets stabbed…Zoro spends all of East Blue injured)
- Zoro scolds himself for not being prepared and failing to save Luffy (super early foreshadowing of Thriller Bark? Probably not but interesting!)
- Cannon Flip and Zoro’s spurting wound
- Luffy declaring Nami to be the new navigator
- Zoro picking up Luffy’s cage leads to Nami reconsidering what she knows about pirates
- Took 5 men to move the cage empty and Zoro moves it with Luffy in it by himself
Chapter 12 Key Observations
- Mohji is first mate…for some reason I always think it’s Cabaji but the level of ridiculousness actually fits
- Chou Chou! Luffy and his animal bonding
- The screen tone on the sound effect?!
- Mayor Boodle. The first of awesome old guys. I guess Rika was the first of the plucky children
- Zoro + sleep = recovery from blood loss
- The store is Chou Chou’s treasure (he knows his master is dead)
- Mohji’s hair is real, not a costume, Luffy says that makes it weirder
Chapter 13 Key Observations
- When did Nami’s boots change to sandals? I just noticed her footwear but it’s like..ankle boots rather than sandals. Infinitely more practical
- Luffy: Crazy is good. I think this is Luffy’s LIFE MOOD
- Luffy wants the map of the Grand Line and Nami as his navigator
- Mohji’s biggest mistake – setting the pet store on fire. He’s hurt Chou Chou’s treasure and pissed off Luffy!
- First unique? Attack – Gum Gum Gavel. Luffy twists his arms before grabbing opponent and spinning them. Up to this point I think it’s just been ‘pistol’ and ‘whip’
- Nami: Pirates!! They’re all the same!! They take away what’s most precious and laugh!! (Arlong Foreshadowing)
- Nami having emotional whiplash between her instincts/knowledge of pirates and the way Luffy (and Zoro) act
Chapter 14 Key Observations
- LOL, Mohji couldn’t say more than Rub Rub man and Buggy thinks he got beaten by a masseuse
- Luffy has ascertained that Nami lost a loved one to pirates. He also mentions he doesn’t want the details (Arlong foreshadowing)
- Boodle as a precursor to Nami’s villagers in Kokoyashi and the need to fight back; the town and its people are Boodle’s treasure
- Buggy ball destroys Boodle’s house where Zoro is sleeping. Starts the trend of wounded Zoro being further injured as a ‘thing’ in East Blue
- Nami agrees to ‘join forces’ and work with Luffy and Zoro for a common goal (she won’t become a pirate)
Chapter 15 Key Observations
- Buggy tells the mayor that towns can’t be treasure.
- Luffy knocks out Boodle to protect him and clear the way to fight
- First use of Gum Gum Balloon! Been waiting multiple chapters for this. Zoro and Nami didn’t know it was coming
- Zoro grumpy Luffy didn’t forewarn him and made him worry for nothing (Right! Couldn’t he have done the same with the cage earlier?!)
Chapter 16 Key Observations
- Mohji legit cares about Richie
- Cabaji v. Zoro – Luffy is concerned about Zoro’s wounds but Zoro is having none of it
- More of the “Let’s hit Zoro where he’s wounded!” game. This goes on for ALL of East Blue
- Zoro then slices his wound himself! Proving he’s a badass like an idiot and giving himself a handicap vs. Cabaji and his lame tricks
Chapter 17 Key Observations
- Zoro: I can’t lose, not even once…to anyone who calls himself a swordsman!!! If I lose to the likes of you when my wounds are only this light…then I may as well give up my dream right now! (Ho shit!)
- Nami: But if you do get that map from Buggy…then-and only then-will I consider teaming up with you again…
- First Oni Giri (also, implication Zoro was playing around before), Note that there are 3 separate blood sprays for the 3 blade strikes
- Buggy references his past with Shanks (red hair) and says Luffy reminds him of Shanks when he was younger because Luffy’s also insolent
