Title: Drum Interlude
Rating: PG
Pairing: Luffy/Usopp
Word Count: 641
As Dalton led Vivi, Sanji, and poor Nami into his house, Usopp grabbed onto Luffy’s mittened hand.
“C’mon,” he said, tugging Luffy around the corner of the sturdy stone building. “This is the PERFECT sort of snow.”
Luffy didn’t bother to resist, too busy looking after the departing back of the tall lady, or was it another form of hiking bear? He let himself be pulled, somewhat oblivious to what was going on until a handful of cold snow hit the side of his cheek.
“Bwah?” For half a second Luffy hesitated, and then he exploded into action, diving to the side as another frosty missile whizzed past his cheek. He returned fire, rapidly scooping up handfuls of snow and flinging them in Usopp’s direction, the half-formed and poorly packed balls, deteriorating and showering big clumps of flakes on the sniper’s head. A veritable snowstorm raged outside of Dalton’s windows for a good four minutes until Luffy finally managed to catch Usopp by the back of his coat and stuffed a very cold, and soon very wet, fistful of snow down along his spine.
Usopp howled and held up his hands in surrender. “Okay, I give. I give. Let’s do something else.”
He bent down to demonstrate, gathering a heap of snow in front of him and packing it together carefully. “I’m going to make a monster!”
Luffy grinned and let out a ringing laugh. “Then I’ll make a man to fight it!” He copied Usopp’s actions, forming a ball and then he started pushing it, collecting more and more snow until the base of his man was nearly as tall as he was.
Usopp goggled at this and quickly upped his plans, adding more snow onto his growing figure. They worked steadily for fifteen minutes, Luffy effortlessly hefting slightly smaller balls onto his towering figure and Usopp sculpting a row of scalloping scales along the tail of his monster. Luffy even found a blanket and a barrel nearby, adding a hat and cap to his hero while Usopp crafted a menacing growl onto his monster’s face. Finally the snow creations were finished and Luffy and Usopp exchanged broad grins and a high five.
“Mr. Snowman!” Luffy shouted.
“Snow monster Shilora!” Usopp returned, the word ‘Fight’ forming on his lips but buried under Sanji’s sudden bellow from inside Dalton’s house.
The strain in the cook’s voice, rather than his usual irritation at their antics, dimmed Usopp’s smile and he faltered, glanced over at the captain. Luffy straightened his hat, his expression changed from playful to grimly determined. He was the one to reach out this time, finding Usopp’s hand and gently pulling him back around the house towards the front door. Luffy paused at the threshold, his hand on the doorknob, and turned to look at the sniper. Usopp couldn’t say what he looked like just then but whatever Luffy saw, it made the corners of his mouth curl up ever so slightly, his eyes crinkling.
Luffy, sandaled feet steady on the hard-packed snow, raised himself on his tiptoes and leaned up and forward, his lips planting a quick, warm kiss on the very tip of Usopp’s reddened nose. The sniper’s eyes widened and he could feel his jaw drop but no words came out. So Luffy supplied some instead.
“Nami’ll be fine. I bet they’ve figured out where there’s a doctor by now.”
And so they went inside, to the comforting warmth of hot chocolate and a fire and to hear the news of a witch on a mountain who was Nami’s only hope.
A little while later, Usopp stood beside their creations and watched Sanji and Luffy head off into the swirling snow-flecked world, Nami strapped to the captain’s strong back. Once they had disappeared, he climbed up the snowman and carefully carved a scar into one white cheek.
