Title: Warmth
Rating: G
Pairing: Luffy/Usopp
Word Count: 558
For once Grand Line weather matched the season. It was December and the Thousand Sunny was clad in snow, an icy wind whistling through the ship’s rigging and tugging playfully at the flag. Franky, genius shipwright that he was, had placed charcoal braziers and pipes to help spread the heat. With even a little bit of motion and energy, most of the rooms on Sunny felt toasty and warm. Even serving as lookout up in the crow’s nest was comfortable with an individual burner for the room and snug walls and a roof keeping out the worst of the chill. Luffy hadn’t even bothered to toss a scarf around his neck as he scampered from room to room while the rest of the crew felt comfortable discarding their coats as soon as they were inside and away from the frosted grass and slick wood of the deck. It was very nice...except for one thing.
Luffy lay in his bed, eyes open in the dark and waited, listening quietly. He could hear Zoro’s gentle snoring mixing with Chopper’s higher-pitched breathing as they snuggled together on the couch. Franky and Sanji, each under a pair of blankets slept comfortably as well. The cold never seemed to bother them, much as Luffy himself often failed to register the change in temperature. Brooke, who had no flesh to become cold, as he often reminded them all with his jokes, was on watch. That meant the person whose teeth Luffy could hear chattering, whose mutters and frantic clawing at a layer of blankets had woken him up, was Usopp.
The sniper had never liked the cold too much after his mother died. His house had been too big to heat and he’d huddled, lonely and pitiful, under a pile of quilts up against the stove. He’d tried and tried to make the hot chocolate and nourishing stews that had always kept him warm but somehow they never tasted quite as good as when his mother had made them. Too, his nose had been frostbitten one year and it ached in the cold no matter how much he wrapped himself up. Franky kept the Thousand Sunny pretty warm but at night, lying still in his bed, Usopp could feel the chill seeping into his bones and just couldn’t get to sleep.
Luffy listened for another five minutes and finally sat up, carefully moving his hat to a safe corner of his bed. “Usopp?” he called into the darkness. “I’m cold.”
That was all it took. The sniper stilled for a moment and then his blankets rustled as they trailed across the floor. Usopp’s face popped over the side of Luffy’s bunk and the captain pushed back his covers to clear a space. It was a tight fit but they managed, squeezed up against each other and buried under a mountain of wool and cotton. Luffy wound his arms around Usopp’s waist and tucked the sniper’s head under his chin so that Usopp’s nose was pressed snugly against his chest and safe from the nip in the air. He had nearly fallen back to sleep when Usopp whispered, “Warmer now?”
There was no hint of chattering teeth and the sniper, snug against him, felt warm through and through. Luffy squished Usopp closer for a moment and then nodded against him in the dark. “Just right.”
