It didn’t seem so bad at first. Oh Nami and Usopp had objected when Luffy wedged himself between them on a car really meant for two but there were no empty spots left and he just laughed and picked his nose while they yelled their protests in his ears. But the lap bar closed snugly over the three of them and then the roller coaster had jerked into motion and it was far too late to find another seat for Luffy and he never would have heard of waiting anyway. The coaster chugged its way up the gleaming wood and steel track, gravity pressing them back into their seats. It was hard to move with a rubber body jammed on one side and unyielding painted metal on the other but Usopp was rather grateful for it as they climbed higher. The tracks peaked at the top of a tall plaster and stone volcano and disappeared inside. It was impossible to know what would come next until they were right at the mouth of the volcano and staring down into a dark pit, a faint red glow visible at the bottom and hot air blowing on their faces.
As soon as their car, the first in the train, tipped over the edge, Nami and Usopp started screaming. The track seemed to go straight down and they were slammed up against the suddenly slender-seeming bar that was all that was holding them in place. Luffy tossed his hands up over his head and yelled too. A split second later the track leveled out and entered a tightening spiral downward. Nami, eyes burning and teeth gone pointy with rage, pulled on Luffy’s cheek with one hand and raged about the money that had fallen out of her shirt during the plunge. Luffy laughed and dropped one arm around her shoulder. Usopp, his eyes bulging almost clear of their sockets and a tendril of snot clinging tenaciously to his nostril, grabbed the captain’s other cheek and shrieked about his pending heart attack. Luffy kept laughing and dropped his other arm over the sniper.
“Luffy! Are you listening to me?!”
“Luffy! I’m gonna die! My heart’s gonna explode from, uh, gravity-speed disease!”
Luffy let go of Usopp long enough to grab his hat and push it into Nami’s hand before he draped a rubber limb back over the liar.
“Hold on tight, guys!”
That was all the warning they got before the roller coaster shot out of the base of the volcano and into a series of triple loops, inverted rolls, and barrel twists. Nami and Usopp screamed again and Luffy laughed again but this time no one left their seat and gave their fate over to the lap bar. Rubber strength kept everyone firmly in place.
The roller coaster’s wheels screeched as the brakes engaged and the trio was flung forward at the sudden stop. The ride was over and they struggled to get out as Luffy’s hold had wedged them even closer together. Then, with his hat safely returned to his head, the captain grabbed his sniper and his navigator by the hand and pulled them, laughingly protesting, to the end of the line to ride again.
