Sanji’s hammock was nice, Luffy decided as he settled his weight into it, but it wasn’t quite what he was looking for. After all, his cook had several inches on him in height, a fact well illustrated by a hammock that didn’t cradle him, left too much space above his head and below his feet. It smelled good though, too good, like meat and spices and Sanji’s ever present cologne mingled with cigarette smoke. It was making him hungry, not at all sleepy like he wanted.
Usopp’s hammock was nice too, he noted, as he stretched out in the sharpshooter’s spot. But it also wasn’t quite what he needed at the moment. The pillow and blanket were both soft and warm, friendly. They were dotted with scenes of ships and waves and islands and reminded the captain of Usopp’s stories. Still, for all that this hammock was comfortable, cozy even, the pictures on the blanket distracted him, had his mind wondering about the past and the future and not ready to sleep.
Luffy padded slowly over to the last hammock he hadn’t yet tried. This one sagged more than the others, had a bit more wear and tear. It was noisy too, creaking when he added his weight, a quiet sigh issuing up amid the woven ropes. The hammock was a bit frayed, with rough patches from spot repairs, but it was warm and his body fit neatly in its hold. And when one tan arm came to wrap around him, bringing his head down to rest on a scarred chest, he knew this one was just right.
