The last few days of the month had a tendency to be somewhat hectic for certain members of the Red Hair pirate crew. And that, in turn, made those days rather boring for a few others. It was crunch time, with looming deadlines, and the galley table tended to be taken over by papers and wreathed in cigarette smoke and swearing. Lucky Roux dominated one end of the table, fortifying snacks heaped around him and a peculiar glint in his eye as he scribbled word after word onto the pages in front of him. Kisha had overflowing ashtrays at both elbows, a perpetual scowl, and a tendency to ruthlessly berate himself while editing his work whenever his word count reached too high. As for Ben, he managed to actually smoke a little less but he muttered almost constantly as he juggled footnoting his article with grading the papers for the correspondence course he taught. All three of them had end-of-the-month due dates and all three were notorious procrastinators.

Shanks, deprived of one of his best sources of entertainment, sulked and honed his own part-time job skills, fleecing the crew whenever anyone was drunk enough to actually risk a cash game and terrorizing the local sea king population. He wasn’t allowed in, had too much of a tendency to be distracting and read over people’s shoulders. Also, as Lucky Roux inevitably pointed out, his audience was bored housewives, not pirate captains and Shanks reading his latest chapter for his magazine serial out loud really made it sound both more salacious and ridiculous that it actually was. Occasionally, when it was really bad, Ben got desperate and pressed the captain into grading a few papers but the comments Shanks left in the margins really weren’t helpful or remotely educational so that didn’t happen very often. It was with particular delight that Shanks sauntered in with a postal gull on his shoulder on the last day of the month, stealing ends of sandwiches and forgetting how much he hated the coffee Kisha and Ben drank to fuel their desperate fingers enough to take one instantly regretted sip.

Afterwards, once the work was on its way to editors and publishers and students, Shanks made all three of them go outside to let the galley air out. He made himself comfortable on Ben’s lap, pushed all of them into a simple game of ‘Fish’ or ‘Four Jack’ to let their brains relax. Penny stakes, which he always won, and then it was off to harass or help the others with their spare work. Holding the yarn for Yasopp was always an easy way to pass the time and his knitting needles weren’t sharp enough to do a mouthy captain much harm.

Yeah...inspired by an earlier drabble this month in which the question of where the money comes from was brought up. So, the Akagamis all have part-time jobs. Generally fishing, but some do other things. Yasopp has a custom sock service! Lucky Roux writes a romance serial for a ladies' magazine, Kisha is a journalist, and Ben writes for a nerdy history journal and teaches a correspondence course twice a year in ancient geopolitics. Shanks' job is to haul sea kings in to market or just scare them away from certain fishing grounds as well as to win staked card games whenever they're in port. Presumptively other forms of income include minor bounty hunting, general day labor (hauling stuff in ports), decorative scrimshaw sales, and whatever other weird cracky thing one could want. I dunno, it's silly, I guess, but I wanted to write it.
