Title: The Family That You Choose
Rating: PG for violent content
Pairing: None, gen
Word Count: 456
A/N or Spoilers: Belle-mere
The sound of iron splintering was remarkably like shattering glass. Belle-mere stared in disbelief down into the red-ringed eyes of a maniac and realized that she was truly in trouble. A few years of training and the supposed might of the world government and its Navy had not been enough to rescue her in the war. She had bled and fallen and been saved only by the hope and promise of two children who needed her more than anyone had ever asked of her. Those children, her precious girls, were all she could think of as the fishman threw her casually to the ground and destroyed her shoulder. He was a rabid dog and his crew would be no better. There were no soldiers in Cocoyashi, only an ex-marine who’d taken up a more important job. There was no one to save the village but she could still save her family.
Genzo prattled on about money, said some nonsense about her cooking dinner for himself and the doctor. Where were her girls? Were they hidden, safe? How could she save them when it was clear the pirates were making plans to stay? What the hell was Genzo thinking? Belle-mere moved slowly, mechanically, rifling through her cupboards and retrieving her meager savings. There were voices, young and tearful, coming from behind her house, and she knew what she had to do. Handing over the one hundred thousand, she felt lighter, a burden removed. She had enough.
“It’s for them, for my two kids.”
Two small bodies barreled into her, two pairs of arms curled round her battered, bloody body and she wrapped her own around them protectively. Nami was bawling, apologizing for what Belle-mere knew she hadn’t meant. And it was all she could do to smile at them, to hold them close and apologize herself. There were so many things she had wanted for them, so many dreams that she would not see through to completion. But her daughters were strong and clever and brave and no matter what happened, they would survive.
The fishman stared down his jagged nose at her and she stood, made her bargain with the devil. He was crazy but he wasn’t stupid and she knew he would keep his word. Nojiko and Nami would be spared. Belle-mere met his gaze over the barrel of the gun trained on her head. Around them the villagers skirmished with the pirates and she hoped Genzo would be smart enough to not get killed. She needed him to live to take care of her girls. Her daughters were crying and Belle-mere ached to hold them. It was too bad they’d see this but she could leave them with one final truth.
“I love you.”

Date: 2010-09-15 01:33 pm (UTC)Where's that line for him? What does it take for him to break stricture? Not even, not really, the threat of his own flesh and blood's death. I mean, his descendants aren't exactly in the wrong (well, they could be in some respects actually since we don't know the whole story yet) but he doesn't break his tennants. On the one hand I suppose we can respect his principles. On the other, I want to smack him.
