The note arrived four months after the incident at Marineford. Delivered by a truly massive albatross, it had been intercepted by Pell as he patrolled along Alabasta’s coastline. There had been no word, no sign, not a hint that Luffy or the Straw Hat pirates, or, perhaps most unbelievably of all, the Pirate King’s second still breathed the world’s air. Vivi had been hopeful for weeks but as the days slipped past without even a credible rumor, the light had begun to dim in her eyes. The guardian had been torn between his duties as he studied the handwriting, the neat cursive swirls of Vivi’s name that was all that adorned the front of the envelope.

Alabasta was being watched. The navy knew quite well who had brought down Crocodile and his Baroque Works organization. That Crocodile had put in an appearance at Marineford, seemingly on Luffy’s side, had come as quite the shock, although perhaps it shouldn’t have as it had happened once already with Nico Robin. And so there had been suspicions and Alabasta’s arid shores, abandoned at its most dire hour, were now patrolled by gun-heavy ships, not all of whom openly bore the blue marine symbol upon their sails. It was a tense time and no one knew that better than the princess.

Pell had a duty to his land but he also had a duty to the young woman he’d watched grow up, to the princess who had sacrificed so much already to save her people. One day she’d be his queen and when that time came he wouldn’t hesitate. It was that knowledge that resolved Pell’s mind and he went straight to the kitchens where he knew Vivi could be found at that time of day. She cried a little as she read it, tears silently trailing down her cheeks, but she smiled as she tossed the letter into one of the fiery ovens. There was new resolve in the set of her shoulders, and Pell felt that last bit of doubt ease from him as his princess briskly wiped her hands and went back to kneading dough.

The warm thermal carried the falcon high into the air; let him soar in a wide circle over the walls of the capitol. Pell dipped his wings in salute to the jackal sitting calmly on the palace roof and headed back towards the sea. Alabasta had endured for centuries and it would take more than the World Government and its Navy to bring it down. The times, after all, were changing.
