There was a moment there, when he looked into Oishi’s eyes, when he’d forgotten they were surrounded by their peers and instructors and upperclassmen. It was happening a lot lately, had happened even before they’d reached synchro. Sometimes Eiji thought that was why they’d been able to achieve such a state in the first place, because they just fell into each other, locked into their own little world, and everything outside of them just fell away. He could feel every breath that made his chest heave beneath his clinging shirt, knew instinctively that Oishi’s breathing mirrored his own. It wasn’t fair, to have won. They were supposed to win together. Together was what they did, as doubles players and as friends, and something stuttered in Eiji’s breast, his heart maybe, skipping a beat beneath his ribcage.

He wanted a hug, he wanted touch, he wanted skin hot and slick with sweat beneath his fingers. He wanted consolation and to console and he didn’t want to be without his Oishi. Eiji’s foot came off the court, took half a step forward, and then stopped, fell back into place at what he read in his partner’s face. Oishis knew, knew in the same way he knew which volleys to catch and when to let Eiji fly free across the court. Those vibrant green eyes were so full of emotion that Eiji thought he might drown in them, lost briefly in the regret and the pain of separation until the overwhelming feeling of pride buoyed him up. That pride, in him and in his accomplishments, shone back at him, reflecting everything he loved about being part of a pair. Oishi smiled at him as he read the realization in Kikumaru’s face and Eiji finally felt himself relax as an idea came to him.

There, in front of so many, he couldn’t run to Oishi like he usually did. And Oishi couldn’t stay, couldn’t even sit in the stands to watch, but he’d be there. They were doubles partners after all and they knew each other better than anyone. And because that was true, Eiji called for it, requesting the racket that had so recently lobbed moon volleys and other carefully calculated shots at him. He caught it easily, feeling the grip tape he’d watched Oishi wrap the past month already beginning to be worn smooth. His partner’s racket raised in salute, he nodded his farewell to Oishi with his head held high and determination in his breast. Sometimes all one could have was symbolism and so he seized his chance to show that the Golden Pair at least understood the true meaning of doubles. Besides, Oishi would be with him in spirit and together they would do themselves and Seigaku proud.

Still, he couldn’t wait until that evening when he could call Oishi and let his calm voice wash over him and take away the loneliness of his partnerless room.
