Title: Spaces
Rating: G
Pairing: Shanks and Ben
Word Count: 296

Ben is big. Tall and broad shouldered and, for all that he’s so damn quiet that sometimes it’s easy to forget he’s there, he still takes up a fair amount of physical space. Shanks, comparatively, is small. Slight and possessing a compact, wiry strength, he shouldn’t need that much room. But his personality is outsized, his will overwhelming, and he fills a room with just his presence. Needless to say, this has caused some friction.

After the fifth month of waking up half of the time on the floor thanks to a restless redhead forcing him out of bed, Ben vowed to go back below deck to his slightly too small but definitely more restful hammock. Shanks learned to sleep with an arm around his waist and with one foot outside of the covers so he kicked only air. And after endless attempts to engage the older man in conversation, or at the very least to make it feel like Ben was aware of him, of them, Ben finally started sitting in booths or chairs rather than at the bar. Shanks inhabits his lap on and off throughout the night, and, if he can’t always get the first mate to put down his book, he at least knows there’s no way Ben can forget where he is.

They never had any trouble on the ship, though. Shanks was BORN to lead, a good-natured rascal who commands loyalty as easily as he breathes, and Ben has always been happiest as the strength in the shadows, the counseling, consoling, confirming voice to steady the hand on the tiller. The partnership works like clockwork, fits that way, and if there’s been a few jammed puzzle pieces elsewhere, well, puzzles aren’t nearly as fun as making a brand new picture.
