A reminder on the rules: 100 word drabbles that must be written in 5 minutes or less, including edits. And if I don't make it in 5 minutes, I must throw out whatever I was working on and approach it from a new angle. Of course, 5 mintues =/= quality, but it does make for an amusing race for myself. All titles taken from various Kansas songs this time and the focus is on various minor/background One Piece characters.
Ratings range from G to barely, maybe, PG-13
CARRY ON WAYWARD SON
The baby resting on Bankina’s stomach was asleep finally and Yasopp settled at her side to gaze down on the new life they’d brought into the world. He had his mother’s nose but his father’s wide mouth. The black fuzz decorating his head was Bankina’s shade but the curliness was Yasopp’s own. A good blend of them and the pirate sighed as he watched a tiny hand grip his finger. “Most fathers want their sons to follow them in trade,” he murmured as he gazed into his baby’s face. Bankina’s smile encompassed them both. “If he wants to, he may.”
ICARUS – BORNE ON WINGS OF STEEL
Limping back to the ship, Tashigi barely had the strength to keep her head up as she led her dejected squadron of marines. Again her sword hadn’t been enough. Justice, as she had known it, hadn’t been enough. And the rumors were flying about a man made of steel and a one-time pirate hunter and she hadn’t seen them. It hurt to acknowledge she couldn’t have defeated Daz Bones. Roronoa had passed her again. Shigure was heavy when she set him down on her bunk, blurry through her tears, but she held in her sobs until her hands were empty.
PEOPLE OF THE SOUTH WIND
Sitting in his cabin, Norland paused in his writing to look out at the white-capped waves. A brisk wind from the south carried him back to North Blue, to a place no longer rightly called home. His heart now lived in a lush green land untouched by snow, dwelt with a people stained brown by the sun and who had the softest of feathers gracing their backs. If he could grow wings, Norland knew, he’d want a pair big enough to catch the warm and fragrant breeze so he could ride its currents back to the friend he’d left behind.
BRINGING IT BACK
The sun was beating down like a hammer and Nojiko sat back on her heels to swipe the back of her hand across her forehead, leaving behind a smudge of dirt. The soil was rockier closer to the bluffs, harder to dig and make ready for planting. But she knew the mikans would grow because a sapling had started coming up at Bellmere’s resting place. It could have been Nami or Gin but she suspected it was the smiling boy. No matter how much work, Nojiko was determined to meet that challenge and spread the grove to the sea’s edge.
QUESTIONS OF MY CHILDHOOD
“Please! Please no! Stop! I’m sorry, I didn’t mean it.” Helmeppo whimpered in his sleep, curled impossibly tighter in on himself. Koby felt around for his glasses, slid them on before he wrapped newly strengthened arms around the blond. It was his partner’s turn for nightmares; his turn to hold the other boy until he either calmed down or grew frantic enough to need waking. In the dark, the terrors of their youth returned to haunt them. At least, and the thought was actually comforting, they were strong enough now to try and keep it from happening to anyone else.
SPARKS OF THE TEMPEST
Few people alive knew his real name and he preferred it that way. The name the world had given him held far more potency for it carried the promise of change. Dragon they called him and he wondered sometimes how many people remembered the Millenial Dragons, creatures who had seen all the world’s sins with their far-seeing eyes. Did those dragons know the truth of the past, of the greatest sin of all? That memory could not afford be lost and he would do everything in his immense power to see it wasn’t. He was going to change the world.
POINT OF KNOW RETURN
The letter came by albatross rather than gull. On its enormous wings it had flown a goodly distance to reach the Baratie. The envelope was slim and smelled of salt and fish and rain but that sand that fell out was unlike any he’d ever seen. His eggplant wrote about fiery spices and how to get water out of plants in the middle of the desert, mentioned Alabastian cuisine and his hopes for the future and All Blue. He said nothing of what had been in the newspapers and Zeff caught himself smiling as he stomped off to start breakfast.
LONELY STREET
At midnight the last regulars shuffled out, arms thrown across friendly shoulders. Makino wiped down the mellow oak of the bar and listened to the silence. Ten years ago she’d have been kicking out rowdy pirates, pushing the captain away from her store of rum. Five years ago Ace would have been there to help her sweep, his brother drowsing in the corner. Less than a year ago, it would have been Luffy, the boy laughing and dreaming of the future. The streets were dark when she blew out the lamp and her pictures couldn’t answer when she said goodnight.
PLAY THE GAME TONIGHT
It was only the third time she’d closed her fingers around its white-wrapped hilt, drawn magnificent steel free of the pristine sheath. The blade was pure and magnificent. She had overheard her father’s whisper on the first occasion; how he likened it to her and said it was both fitting and a pity he had no male heirs. Her heart was on fire when she won, beating that stubborn boy. It had burned her eyes and made her cry. But he believed in her, the only one, and she put Wadou away with every expectation of drawing her sword again.
MYSTERIES AND MAYHEM
“One…Two…Jango!” Hina stood on the dock, arms sternly crossed but a tiny smile quirking her lips, and watched her lieutenants work. The pair of them moved among the mob of pirates like a pair of roosters in a hen house. They spun around in synch and stood back to back, light flashing off steel fists, red lenses, and a swinging chakram. After a smooth four count Fullbody neatly turned, groaning when Jango didn’t follow. Finally he led his hypnotized partner and the throng of captives in a neat two-step towards the jail and Hina had the courtesy not to laugh.
MIRACLES OUT OF NOWHERE
There was still so much work but the king ordered him to rest and he could not refuse even though he was left with nothing to keep him from sorrow. Chaka sought solace in his other shape; four midnight legs racing over burning sand enough to bring him some relief until he stopped and found where they had brought him. The hills above the palace ended in rocky cliffs overlooking the desert. Pell’s Point, he’d always called it after his falcon partner and he could swear even now he could see Pell winging towards him. But that was impossible, right?
WHAT’S ON MY MIND
The bounty wasn’t terribly high but it was enough to fill their pockets with beri and their hearts with the knowledge of a job well done. Without their aniki they couldn’t tackle the truly evil but they made a difference wherever they could and it kept them fed. With their swords still in good shape and a portion handed over to make up for a wreaked pastry shop, Johnny leaned against his partner and tilted his head back to watch the first star come out. “Shall we?” he asked, nudging Yasuku with an elbow and the other man nodded. “Yeah.”
REASON TO BE
The crowd was silent as he walked by. His bootsteps rang like shots on the cobblestones and he could see every marine posted around the square holding a breath. It was pointless. He would not be rescued. His crew was gone, scattered to the four Blues except for a very special few who watched with damp or dry eyes from within the mass of people. The shouting started when he knelt on the platform and the stage he’d been waiting for was set. He gave them their answer and the crowd roared. He was smiling when the blades came down.
