The day Zoro turned eighteen his companions helpfully informed him that he had three very important tasks to fulfill now that he had technically reached legal age. Although dubious, the swordsman had dutifully agreed to complete each of his three assignments. Tasks one and two were relatively easy. All Zoro had to do was walk into the nearest convenience store, buy a pack of cigarettes and also purchase one of the magazines that were kept wrapped in black paper underneath the counter. Knowing that Zoro would not know which one to request, his two friends had kindly provided him with a folded slip of paper to hand to the clerk.
The balding man behind the counter hadn’t even bothered to stop doing the daily crossword when Zoro requested his pack of smokes. The note however, once it had been unfolded and given a once over, elicited a raised eyebrow. Taking in the three swords at Zoro’s waist, the clerk wisely decided to bite his tongue and handed over the covered magazine with no questions asked. The first two tasks finished, Zoro started on the third.
His friends had informed him that he needed a better wardrobe now that he was legally a ‘man.’ Zoro wasn’t so sure about that one, but both of his friends were older and had seen more of the world. Certainly they didn’t get lost the way he tended to. Yosaku, contentedly puffing away on the cigarettes Zoro had procured, walked on one side of the birthday boy and Johnny, carrying the still-wrapped magazine, strode along on the other. Between the two of them, they managed to herd their younger friend (even though they called him older brother – a conundrum that continued to puzzle Zoro long after they had regretfully parted ways) to a small clothing district and ordered him to not come out of a store until he had purchased something suitable for an adult.
Zoro being Zoro, he ended up happily striding out of one store in a green and black striped haramaki. Only the swordsman, Johnny and Yosaku silently agreed, would find something worn by fuddy duddies to assume as his new adult wear. But their aniki was pleased with how roomy the sash was and, seeing as it was his birthday, the two bounty hunters decided not to dissuade him. His three assigned tasks complete – although Zoro still didn’t see the point – they all made their way to a nearby tavern and got stinking drunk.
There, well into the fourteenth or fifteenth round, Zoro finally managed to snatch his second convenience store purchase from Johnny’s slack grip. As he tore off the wrapper, the two bounty hunters opposite him sat frozen in their chairs. Zoro’s eyes widened when he saw the cover, widened even more as he flipped through a few pages. Stopping at the center, his jaw dropped. Johnny and Yosaku cowered and waited for the killing blow that never came. Instead, Zoro was too busy turning over some more pages, stopping finally at a section called ‘Technique” where he goggled for a second and then started to drool.
“Is that really possible?” he wondered aloud.
When Johnny timidly answered in the affirmative, Zoro had finally taken in the two nervous and embarrassed men in front of him and cocked an eyebrow. After a few seconds, when the swordsman neither spoke nor drew his blades to slay them, the two bounty hunters exchanged a quick glance. It was then that the fourth task that had to be completed came to light.

Zoro wasn’t so sure about that one, but both of his friends were older and had seen more of the world. Certainly they didn’t get lost the way he tended to. *more dead*
Haramaki... adult wear... Oh, Zoro, I love you and your simple though process.
they all made their way to a nearby tavern and got stinking drunk.
But of course!
Zoro was too busy turning over some more pages, stopping finally at a section called ‘Technique” where he goggled for a second and then started to drool.
“Is that really possible?” he wondered aloud. Crud. You've got me laughing like a nut, which wouldn't be a problem except that at the moment it's making my piercing rub against my shirt and hurt a little.
It was then that the fourth task that had to be completed came to light. You could write this. Or really, anything else set in this pre-Luffy universe of awesome.
