Title: Her Humans (UGH so bad)
Rating: PG
Word Count: 669
Pairing: Shanks and Ben
She woke up from her third nap of the day feeling warm and sated. The ship's cook was very kind to her, feeding her tidbits of fish and letting her sleep curled next to the warmth of the stove. But the man was busy now, chopping up some noxious smelling onions, and she didn't exactly want his attention anyway. She sauntered through and out of the galley, twining around the legs of any pirate she encountered, purring whenever one was good enough to pause and give her a good rub. But these still weren't the men she wanted.
She emerged out into the sunlight on the deck, blinking a little as she searched for her two humans. A quick scan caught sight of several men...and two of those devil birds perched on HER railing. A quick pounce and the ship was rid of those loud, dirty seagulls. She licked a paw smugly before jumping down to keep looking. A brief jaunt up to the fo'castle and a peek in the wheel house and there was still no sign of them. It was the middle of the day. Where were they?
They had to be in the loud one's cabin, she finally decided. But as to why they'd be in there when the sky was so blue and the wind felt so good, she didn't know. The door was closed, but she heard could hear the loud one talking. She ducked in through her door, hesitating for a moment with just her head in the room. The last time she'd come in here during the day and jumped on her humans, the quiet one had made a funny noise. Sure she had landed on his backside, but it wasn't like she hadn't napped in the curve of his spine before.
Ok, so he hadn't had on all his fur, strange how humans seemed to be able to take it on and off, and she did have sharp claws, but that didn't explain why he'd scooped her up so quickly and popped her back outside. Nor why something had blocked her door. The loud one had laughed, but he was always laughing. She liked him...she had found him first, and he gave her special treats and little sips of fiery water when no one was looking. He liked to play with her, and he knew how to give the best belly rubs on the ship.
The other one was much more quiet. He was soothing to be around when her nerves were rattled. He gave her treats too, although much more rarely. And he'd pet her for hours or let her nap on him if she found him when he had one of those book things. Sometimes, on the rare occasions she was frightened, he'd sprawl on the loud one's bed and let her hunker down on top of his head. She didn't know why that made her feel safe, but it worked.
She looked up towards them on the bed. Some of the fur was gone, but most of it was still on. They were wrapped around each other, and the quiet one was petting the loud one's head. They did that a lot, she'd noticed. But it seemed like a good thing. The quiet one kept the loud one from being too loud or too crazy most of the time. And the loud one made the quiet one happy, made him smile. The loud one was talking right now, but much more quietly than normal. They looked comfy and like they could spare her some attention.
A small leap and she was on the bed. A few steps forward, and she was worming her way underneath the loud one's hand. He started stroking her immediately, and she purred, a contented rumble that vibrated her against him. The quiet one reached down to scratch between her ears, and she thought she'd melt right into the bed. This was even better than the day outside. Her humans had the best ideas.
A/N Bah, I don't like the last line. But I can't think of anything right now.
