Volume 3 – Don’t Get Fooled Again
Due to the way chapters are included in the various volumes, sometimes story arcs will be split up. Last volume, there was a definite theme, but the overall name of the volume didn’t really have anything to do with the theme. This time around that is not the case even though parts of two arcs are included.
The obvious element of the name of the volume to the theme is Usopp and Klahadore/Kuro, but the bits with Buggy and Gaimon also work into the theme/name. Buggy ‘fools’ his original crew into thinking he eats the devil’s fruit but then actually DOES eat it due to his own shortcomings. Gaimon spends twenty years defending a treasure that isn’t real only to show that he had discovered a different treasure all along. Usopp is the ‘boy who cried wolf’ but the real wolf is Klahadore/Kuro. Hypnotism features as well, something else that can be considered a ‘fooling’ technique.
There’s a lot in this volume again about Oda setting up expectations for what pirates do/are, both the Shanks/Luffy sort and the Buggy/Kuro sort. Luffy (and the audience) needs to not get tricked into losing sight of what many pirates are really like but at the same time need to realize that the lies that are told are sometimes more valuable than the truth. There’s a lot of good stuff in this volume but I think the next one really solidifies Usopp’s character while this one’s more about his backstory.
Chapter 18 Key Observations
- Luffy asks Buggy where Shanks is and finds out Buggy considers Shanks his mortal enemy
- Buggy damage the hat – sliced off a piece- and Luffy tells Buggy it’s his treasure and loses his temper
- Buggy then targets the hat and stabs 3 daggers through the center of it
- Luffy reveals the hat once belonged to Shanks and symbolizes their promise
- Buggy reveals he and Shanks were ‘pirate apprentices’ together and Luffy is incensed that Buggy would put himself on the same level of Shanks, whom he considers a great man
Chapter 19 Key Observations
-Buggy says Shanks is the man who has made him the most angry AND stole a great treasure from him
- Flashback – Shanks is wearing the hat (I am at a loss as to when he gets it from Roger…I thought it was right before Roger turns himself in but this flashback would belie that). They are pointlessly fighting over where it is colder (SvN pole - in real-world terms, Shanks’ call of the South Pole is technically correct)
- First appearance of younger!Rayleigh (he isn’t named)
- Buggy is obsessed with monetary treasure even then…Shanks isn’t so sure. Buggy says Shanks and the others on the ship are weak/soft because they don’t go after treasure (money) the way he thinks a pirate should
- Buggy finds and keeps a treasure map of a treasure on the ocean floor and the rest of the crew gets a devil’s fruit
- Shanks: I’ll make time to see the world. I’ll do some pirating along the way, of course. He notes that they think too differently and would be better off going their separate ways. Shanks: Being a pirate is all about going your own way.
- Buggy: If ever we cross paths on the high seas, it’ll be a fight to the finish!!! Agreed? Shanks: Agreed. That’s also what being a pirate is all about.
- RE: the devil’s fruit – the captain said whoever wanted it could eat it..Shanks notes it’s worth 100 million berries
- Buggy fake eats the DF to steal it along with the map he found. Shanks being friendly causes him to swallow the REAL DF and he also loses the map over the side. Shanks saves him from drowning but Buggy blames him for ruining his ‘grandiose’ plans
- Buggy sees Nami running off with his treasure and goes after her
Chapter 20 Key Observations
- Luffy stops Buggy by kneeing him from the groin – a weakness of his DF is revealed (Luffy’s weakness to edged weapons had been previously mentioned and Buggy also grabbed ahold of him earlier showing that as paramecia types they have similar vulnerabilities)
- Luffy realizes Buggy’s feet don’t fly and uses it against him (tickles, stubs toes, pinches skin)
- Nami ties up most of Buggy’s pieces and Luffy blasts them far away (leads to Buggy cover arc story)
Chapter 21 Key Observations
- Nami agrees to join Luffy’s crew ‘for the time being’ because she thinks she can make money w/them
- Townspeople show up and Luffy says he knocked out the mayor and that he, Nami, and Zoro are pirates…this of course makes the townspeople very upset. Nami mad and Zoro amused
- Zoro can’t walk and needs Luffy to carry him – this might be the MOST normal Zoro ever is after injury
- Chou Chou repays his debts (another theme?) and helps them get away
- Luffy left behind half the treasure on purpose and Nami is not pleased while Zoro is amused again
Chapter 22 Key Observations
- Nami fixes Luffy’s hat and marvels at Luffy and Zoro’s utter incompetence
- Zoro sleeping off his injuries and also trend of Zoro hanging back to guard the boat
- Luffy says he doesn’t like being shot because it scares him
- first mention of the Red Line and direct look at Buggy’s map of the Grand Line
- Town at the center of the Red Line that the Grand Line cuts right through – Mariejois?
- Grand Line as place of horror (Baratie forshadowing)
- Luffy is partially sure they’ll find the One Piece because L: I’m very lucky.
Chapter 23 Key Observations
- Nami comes to her senses and says they need a better ship before they go onto the Grand Line (Luffy wants meat and Zoro wants booze) and directs them to Usopp’s island to ‘plan and prepare’
- Usopp as the Boy Who Cried Wolf but the town is largely chill in a way that seems mildly violated later
- I love Carrot, Onion, and Pepper…like, way too much. Their designs are so cute
- repeated instances of Usopp being called a liar; Usopp and his wavering bravery
- first instance of CAPTAIN Usopp and his xxx followers (in this case 80 million)
- Luffy thinks Usopp is funny
- Usopp tells them to approach Kaya’s mansion in their search for a ship but Nami says they should forget it after hearing Kaya’s backstory – INTERESTING
- Usopp tries to self recruit but is rejected because he says he’ll be the captain
Chapter 24 Key Observations
- LOL Zoro teasing Usopp’s crew. Implies that Usopp was eaten (should’ve been Luffy but because they were just talking about Ogresses, Nami gets blamed)
- Usopp goes to the mansion to tell lies, which is very nice according to the kid trio
- Klahadore doesn’t like Usopp and his influence on Kaya but she likes him
- Anime vs Manga – in the anime Usopp’s up in the tree and Kaya’s on the second floor while in the manga he’s sitting on the ground leaning up against the tree and Kaya Is on the first floor
- Giant goldfish and poop island – foreshadows Little Garden
- Luffy and co. hear about Usopp from the kid trio and Luffy says Usopp’s a nice guy and resolves to get a ship from Kaya after all
- Usopp = meddler, bossy, boastful and that’s why the kid trio likes him
- Klahadore says Usopp is the son of a filthy pirate and his insults to his father are what set Usopp off as opposed to remarks about himself
- Usopp punches Klahadore!
Chapter 25 Key Observations
- Kaya at least slightly aware of being manipulated by Klahadore
- Appearance of Jango – also Onion in contrast to Usopp in which the times he’s coming running and screaming, he’s told the truth
- Luffy tells Usopp he knows his father Yasopp (first time Yasopp is directly named)
- Tells Usopp that Yasopp is with Shanks’ crew; Usopp is impressed because Shanks is a great pirate
- Plan is to murder Kaya
Chapter 26 Key Observations
- Klahadore = Captain Kuro revealed as well as that he plays the LONG game…3+ years on this scheme
- Key element is Django hypnotizing Kaya to leave her fortune to Klahadore in the will and making her death look like an accident
- Kuro says Kaya’s parents’ death wasn’t part of the plan. Django doubts the truth of that (Confusing!)
- Luffy falls for hypnotism for the 1st time
- Kuro is confident his plan will work because no one will believe Usopp
- Usopp trio can read him so easily, awww
- Zoro wanting to go to the beach because Luffy and asking for the trio to tell him where to go
Notes on Usopp’s Design
- Usopp’s initial design…is not my favorite. His hair is a little short and his nose is a little pointy. I like the slightly longer hair and rounder nose that develops by the end of East Blue
- Usopp’s smile…awwww and the 3 eyelashes are already part of the design too
- Also, Usopp does NOT look just like Yasopp so much in Chapter 1 but here you can see it
