“Help!”

Usopp’s yelps were audible even through the thick wood of the galley door and a round of glances made its way through the quartet of crew members currently occupying the cozy space.

“Stop it! You’re going to yank my entire scalp off if you keep pulling like that. Ahh! No, don’t do that either. I like my ear where it is on the side of my head thank you very much.”

That didn’t sound very promising and Nami sighed and dismissed the idea of sending Sanji out to help. The cook would probably only manage to make things worse by antagonizing the silent partner to Usopp’s very loud exchange. She didn’t feel much like getting up herself, though, and she turned the sort of hopeful, big-eyed gaze she usually saved for conning salesmen on Robin, making sure to flutter her lashes when the older woman met her eyes. Robin’s slight smile widened ever so slightly and she set down her book next to her half-empty teacup.

“Shall I see if I can sort this out?”

“Please, Robin?”

Nami’s tone was dipped in honey and it made the archaeologist want to laugh. Instead she just continued smiling and rose to her feet. A moment passed while her eyelids slipped shut and then she turned to Sanji.

“Cook-san, the scissors please.”

Thus armed, Robin ventured out of the galley and onto the deck where somewhat more subdued – meaning at a volume not quite loud enough to rattle the plates in Sanji’s cupboards – yelling continued. Usopp was flailing at Zoro, both hands pushing down on top of the one the swordsman had wrapped around a hilt, half of the blade drawn free. But what made the sight somewhat different from the normal threats of violence from Zoro towards nearly anyone who irritated him was the way in which his green-topped head was trapped snugly next to the sniper’s.

Usopp’s bandanna was gone and dark, springy curls stuck out at all angles from his head. And one particularly tenacious curl had apparently managed to get snagged quite firmly around the golden drops that hung from Zoro’s left ear. It would be most interesting, Robin thought as she studied the situation with a gleam of amusement in her eye, to find out just how they’d gotten tied together in that fashion. But first she would have to get them apart.

“Damn it Usopp.” Zoro’s voice was more of a rumbled growl than the sniper’s anxious shouting. “Just hold still for five seconds.”

“I don’t wanna be known as the Great Captain Usopp of the One Ear, Zoro! You hold still and I’ll try again to untangle it.”

Robin smothered the undignified giggle that threatened to escape when the two pirates struggled against each other, straining away only to be pulled back by pains in scalp and ear and then finally heads as they knocked into one another. She stepped forward before another round of arguing could begin and brandished the scissors.

“May I swordsman-san? Long-nose-kun?”

“Robin! Thank goodne- I mean, I was going to rescue my hair from this bastard’s clutches in just a moment but since you’ve taken the trouble to come out here…”

Zoro just scowled and looked away. That was enough of a signal and Robin stepped forward to peer at the mess they’d gotten themselves into. Usopp’s hair was quite thoroughly snarled around Zoro’s earrings and she could see knots here and there that would be impossible to untie. Once again her thoughts turned to just how this had happened as she raised the scissors and carefully cut them free.

“I imagine it’s a very interesting tale how the two of you came to find yourselves bound together this way, hmm?”

Robin stepped back and raised an eyebrow at the way Usopp’s face flushed as he rubbed at the side of his head. Zoro’s scowl deepened and he snorted.

“Gotta go take these out now and clean them off.”

He flicked his head, earrings tinkling dully since they were still entwined with hair, and then stomped off. Usopp watched his retreating back for a moment and then turned back to Robin.

“Thanks. I, er, I gotta go find my bandanna and stuff. Yeah.”

And then he was gone, quickly following in Zoro’s footsteps that led down beneath the deck. Robin finally did laugh then, once he was out of earshot, and went back into the galley. After she was settled and sipping at her newly topped-off cup of tea, Nami glanced at her over the top of her own book.

“So? What was that all about?”

Familiar inscrutable smile firmly in place, Robin thoughtfully tapped the side of her nose. “Cutting through to the heart of the matter, I suppose.”
