There was treasure everywhere, gold blazing in the setting rays of the sun. Shandian and Skypiean alike picked through the piles, stopping every now and then to hold up a particularly fine or unusual piece. They were like children, giddy with their new-found freedom and gained knowledge of the past. How long would it last?
Laki watched the proceedings from the sidelines, injured body still healing from Ener’s attack. Beyond clothing and hairstyle, there was little to differentiate the two peoples from each other. The Skypieans had antenna and that was basically it. Heads bent down to study the antique artifacts showed only winged backs, profile shadows in which it was impossible to distinguish one group from the other. Deep in her heart, Laki wished that peace would last. She saw Aisa turn to look at her then, a true smile finally on the little girl’s face, and so missed the other’s approach.
The Skypiean looked as meek and demure as most of the dwellers in the cloud city, but Laki thought she had seen this one piloting a craft through the Upper Yard during all the madness. She hadn’t believed her eyes then, but somehow now it didn’t seem so impossible. The young woman smiled at her and stretched out a hand. There was a single bracelet resting on her palm, a twisted rope of gold. As Laki watched, smooth fingers somehow pulled it apart and created two identical circles. The Skypiean slid one onto her own wrist and smiled as she moved the other over Laki’s own unresisting hand. That was it. No words, nothing but a bright smile before the woman walked away. Laki touched the skin-warmed metal and watched the retreating back. She had a feeling the peace would last.
