Title: Stripes
Rating: PG
Pairing: Hina/Tashigi
Word Count: 300
Notes: I have no idea what the rank insignia in One Piece look like and I'm too lazy to go look it up so please excuse any errors.
Smooth and cold, iron with a golden coating, as fake as what it signified. Tashigi scowled as she ran her thumb over the simple bar she held cupped in her palm. One gold bar to replace her two pips. One gold bar to reward her for a failure headquarters refused to acknowledge. One gold bar to wear, one false front to present to the world.
Her formal jacket hung over the back of her chair, waiting, the two circles on the collar that marked her rank staring back like two hard unblinking eyes, accusing. Finally she sighed. There was no help for it. Captain Smoker, despite his decision to ignore an order from a superior and continue his pursuit of Strawhat Luffy and his crew, wouldn’t go so far as to break every rule. Tashigi, at least, would have her promotion, no matter how much she didn’t want it.
When she finally moved, the pins that had made her a sergeant major came off easily in her hands. The lieutenant’s bar was far more stubborn. Whether it was her own reluctance or simply the angle, the post refused to go through the heavy weave of the white coat. At last she managed to jam it through, stabbing it into her thumb in the process. Blood welled up from the tiny hole, left a stain, and all Tashigi could do was stare at it and wonder where it had all gone so very very wrong.
Hina found her that way as she stopped in to say goodbye. She caught up the injured finger, sucked on it with a gentleness she seldom revealed. And then she captured Tashigi’s gaze and held it for a long moment.
“You,” she said at last, “will live up to this and beyond. Earn it for yourself.”
