Usopp chugged his third glass of eggnog, setting the cup down on the trestle table in the galley with a hearty clunk. It had tasted a little funny at first, like maybe it was slightly watered down, but after he’d finished that first drink, the second and third had gone down so smoothly and deliciously that he was thinking he needed a fourth. Especially because the galley was starting to feel a little warm.

Usopp pulled off the fuzzy brown sweater he’d been wearing all day against the snowy chill, the slightly cooler air with its heavy scent of spices comfortable against his skin. It was a cheerful evening, just a few days before Christmas, and the crew had finally seemed to find the holiday spirit. Sanji had been baking nonstop and now he stood at the sink in his pink apron scrubbing at dishes and warbling at Nami and Robin every so often. A glass of sherry stood at his elbow and it was clear to everyone that the chef had been hitting a couple of different bottles over the course of the day, especially the rum if the several cakes he’d produced were anything to go by.

Chopper, who was doubly excited by the prospect of Christmas and his upcoming birthday, had tinsel strung between his antlers. He and Robin had decorated the tree that stood in all its glittery glory down in the aquarium bar while Brook and Franky had been busy performing Christmas carol duets. They were on their third variation of Wassail at the moment, two steaming mugs of the stuff in front of them. As for Nami, she served Usopp another glass of eggnog with a grin and for once the sniper never thought to be suspicious of the way the navigator was being so nice or the many glasses of the ‘nog she had had herself. He would, Usopp thought muzzily, have to make the improvements to her Clim-A-Tact extra special this year.

Zoro and Luffy were drinking hot chocolate across the table and getting marshmallow mustaches on their upper lips much to everyone’s amusement. It was nice to see the swordsman finally relax and laugh although Usopp wasn’t sure about the small bottle he kept tipping into his and Luffy’s mugs. ‘Peppermint,’ he’d said when Usopp had asked, a twinkle in his eye, and the one sip Usopp had had was certainly minty. Luffy seemed to like it, smacking his lips and chuckling at Zoro and he kept trying to hang a stray ornament on Chopper’s antlers.

His feet had a tendency to stretch out beneath the table, bare toes catching Usopp’s overalls and twisting them when they weren’t sneaking inside and up to rub with a hint of chill across his calves. It felt nice, and secret somehow, and Usopp was too warm and comfortable to worry about getting caught.

He even grinned at Robin later, a half-formed ‘thank-you’ on his lips as the sprig of mistletoe appeared over his head just as Luffy had decided to come around the table to whisper a plan for teasing Zoro in his ear. Luffy’s eyes slipped closed as soon as Usopp wrapped an arm around his waist and he tasted like chocolate and peppermint schnapps. It was only the whistles and the clapping that made Usopp finally let go and he did so with a blush even while Luffy smiled and plopped down on the bench next to him. Nami, bless her, had another glass of eggnog handy and it wasn’t until his headache the next morning that Usopp suspected anything. Still, the real warmth he’d felt hadn’t been from the spiked drink but from his nakama’s laughter and especially from Luffy’s open affection.
