“Don’t let them do any more damage.” Shanks’ eyes were hard, hazel color taking on a reddish tint in the dim light that filtered through the dust raised by the ongoing battle. “He’s suffered more than enough already.”

He was gone then, vanished with the speed that tended to surprise those who hadn’t faced him before and were put off guard by his drawling speech and casual attitude. The crew scattered, seeking out choice positions to carry out the captain’s orders but staying circumspect until Shanks played his hand. It was easy to do; the bay and docks around Marineford were chaotic, filled with confused fighting and panic and an overwhelming sensation of grief verging on madness. Ben kept his eyes trained on Jinbe and the limp form he carried under one arm. The attention of the admirals was turning in their direction and that just wouldn’t do. His best option was to go up, up and out so he could get a better view and provide covering fire if need be.

He’d positioned himself on a topgallant yard, watching closely as Buggy of all people hauled the former shichibukai and Luffy further into the sky, when a submarine suddenly surfaced. Law, of the Heart Pirates, if he wasn’t mistaken, and for half a moment he trained his gun on the young man who’d run out onto the dripping deck and was shouting up at Buggy. What possible motive could Law have for coming? Why did he want Luffy? He was a doctor, true enough, but Luffy was a rival and one who’d already managed to get him into trouble. Then again, they’d have done the same for Whitebeard or any of his men if somehow a similar situation had ever occurred. Ben turned his attention back to the clown pirate and his burden, scowling as he watched a streak of light stream upward out of the battlefield. He didn’t want to tip off their presence early but orders were orders. The bodies fell, were safely caught, Admiral Kizaru took aim as did Ben, his finger tensed on the trigger.

Shanks had impeccable timing. He could feel the sudden burst of familiar haki wash over him, not as strong as it could be but certainly strong enough. The air of growing madness calmed, not gone but reduced, waiting as many of the individual fights ground to a halt in surprise. “I’ve come…to stop this war.” The words rang out, carried easily even to Ben’s ears, and he bit down harder on cigarette between his teeth. That was their intention but it remained to be seen if they would succeed.

Kizaru reacted to the pronouncement with his usual aplomb and kept his attention squarely on his targets. Ben watched the light glowing brighter and brighter on the end of one finger and finally broke his silence. It was hard to tell if Kizaru had noticed him before or not. The admirals were strong and once again Kizaru seemed unfazed. But he’d bought enough time for Luffy to be brought inside the submarine, not that it provided much protection from someone like Kizaru, but it was better than nothing.

The chill in air and the rapid freezing of the bay reminded him that Aokiji was still there. Kizaru, heedless of the gun Ben was pointing at him, had brought both hands up and light was filling his palms and spilling over. The submarine had vanished, gone back beneath the water in an attempt to escape the growing rime of white but whatever Kizaru had planned would be more than enough to penetrate ice, ocean, and hull alike. His finger twitched and Ben reluctantly took it off the trigger. Shanks had made his declaration and to fire would only defeat part of their purpose in coming. Luffy’s fate was out of his hands now, in Law’s, and at least the captain of the Heart pirates was clever and a survivor. The rain of light lanced into the ocean and Kizaru turned his attention back to shore. Ben shook his head, bemused at the apparent disregard, and took the opportunity to slip away, made his way back across the stunned battleground to his captain’s side. Depending on how things went – if they ended up in a worse case scenario after all - Kizaru would be staring down the barrel of his gun soon enough.
