For Day 11

Title: Exhale
Rating: G
Pairing: None, gen
Word Count: 320
Spoilers: Through 597

The world held its breath. It waited, counting the minutes, the hours, the days, and then the weeks and months. Finally it exhaled.

There had been no sign of Straw Hat Luffy for over a year. The Navy had not taken any credit for his capture but, as witnessed briefly in the frantic scrambles at Marineford, there still lived figures long assumed to be dead and forgotten. It was possible, unlikely but possible, that the reverse was true. Regardless of Straw Hat Luffy’s status, savvy reporters and those with long memories and firmly held grudges or bitter loss had recognized some of the criminals that had appeared with the Straw Hat at Ace’s execution. And news about Silvers Rayleigh, about the Dark King himself, had gotten out; the unexpected reappearance of Roger’s second together with Straw Hat Luffy and the former shichibukai Jinbei had in some ways been more terrifying than the confrontation between Whitebeard’s forces and the marines. Rumors abounded about what those three particular individuals could be planning, especially given the OTHER rumor about Straw Hat Luffy’s relationship to the revolutionary Dragon and the revelations from Sengoku, who, as it so happened, had stepped down.

It was a nervous time, as every island anticipated an appearance from the infamous and unpredictable rookie and his redoubtable allies. But Straw Hat Luffy did not arrive. There were alleged sightings and all sorts of scuttlebutt on the various marine bases but the pirate himself refused to show. And so the wild stories and the newspaper articles became rumors and whispers which faded into the occasional scary bedtime story as people moved on and focused instead on the growing turmoil in the New World and on Dragon’s continual shadowy progress in the Blues.

The world moved on and it wasn’t ready when Straw Hat Luffy, and his nakama, the Straw Hat Pirates, decided it was time to REALLY put on a show.

Ooh, I really liked this. What you've captured here is, I think, a wonderful approximation of what fandom's reaction is going to be when the Straw Hats reunite.

This is a true story in several different but equally true ways. ♥
