Well...Chopper's young and hasn't had that much interaction with people yet. I can see why he didn't get it. But I do think Zoro's speech was a necessary thing...and it foreshadowed so well all the hardship that was/is to come as well so Oda didn't just toss it out for no reason/to produce yet more Water 7 angst.
