And I'm spent...
25. Always Will Be
Rocket Man careened through the dangerous seas, still on its course for Enies Lobby. Zoro clapped Luffy on the shoulder once his swords were away. The captain’s back was damp and drops of seawater fell from his bangs, his hat. Tracks of saltwater trailed down the swordsman’s bare chest and he casually shook his head to whip them off his earrings. Gold chimed, almost inaudible beneath the ocean’s roar, and the younger pirate turned to grin at him. They slapped hands, a wordless congratulation, and Zoro left Luffy sitting on the engine while he went to look for a towel.
26. Steel Meets Steel
With Luffy gone, the captain having dashed off in his impatience, Zoro grudgingly let the chef move at his side as they cleared a path to the tower. His swords flashed, took out patrols of marines and some of the odder men the World Government employed on their so-called island of justice. The place was a damned maze and Zoro ran out of patience too and started cutting through floors. They all stood finally together in a line and faced Robin and their enemies. The flag burned but it was the invisible sparks flying from cutting gazes that blazed brighter.
27. Living in Victory
Kaku dropped finally, a wheezing laugh escaping his lungs as he handed over his key. There was something satisfying in triumphing over this man, the one who’d given the bad news first of all and the one who’d kept him from Luffy’s side in Iceburg’s rooms. Zoro didn’t bother to think about how long the battle had taken. He wouldn’t be too late. The captain would see to that, holding off the leopard man while his nakama took care of the rest. Tearing down the crumbling hallway, the swordsman hoped he’d get there in time to see the final blow.
28. A Legend Reborn
Water was in his lungs and Zoro coughed and spat on the unfamiliar ship. Everyone was there: Robin and Usopp in disguise and all the rest of his nakama, all of them but the captain. With Robin safe, it was time to find him and get the hell out of there. The swordsman headed for the bridge and watched the smoke rise from the other end. Luffy was still fighting, the epic battle with Lucci not yet finished, and Zoro stiffened his spine and did his job, told them to wait. Until Luffy got there, they would protect each other.
29. Hearts on Fire
Lieutenants and captain boiled over the sides of their ships, washed in a wave of blue and white marine uniforms over the remaining sliver of the Bridge of Hesitation. Rob Lucci grinned, eyeteeth gleaming, and raised spotted, clawed hands. It was a fight for the ages, a fight for life and for so much more. For nakama and for freedom, for the unadulterated truth and for all the things they held dear. Like Alabasta but on a scale so much greater they couldn’t even fathom what they were truly doing. Luffy, Zoro, and their nakma stood united against the world.
30. Dreams Come True
Somehow they’d done it again. The odds, overwhelming as they had been, were beaten. The Straw Hat pirates were free and sailing on their way down the Grand Line and towards whatever else destiny had in store. Robin was home, safe and full of so many honestly cheerful smiles that the entire crew couldn’t help but smile back. And Usopp too, in spite of the truth in the words and blows exchanged. Luffy sat on the prow and crowed his most cherished dream to the sky. Behind him, hand resting on his shoulder, Zoro mouthed his own vow in return.
