“Damn woman.”

Tashigi looked over from her stack of paperwork at Smoker’s muttered comment.

“Sir?”

The gruff marine captain glanced at the young woman nearly buried in piles of paper at the other desk. His own wasn’t quite so bad. Tashigi had only been with him for two weeks, but she had eagerly insisted on tackling the backlog of forms and files that had been flooding his office. She was a good girl, and he knew she had promise. If only she weren’t so stuffed with regulations. Or…Smoker watched as one of the dangerously high stacks swayed unsteadily on her desk.

“Sergeant. Look o—“

But the warning was too late, and Tashigi was buried in a blizzard of tri-colored triplicate. He could only sigh as she frantically tried to get the papers back in order. And of course she had to leap to her feet, saluting in apology.

“I’m sorry sir. I’ll fix it right away.”

The sword at her waist managed to hit another pile, sending still more paper to cover the floor. Yes, Tashigi was a good marine, but she was dangerously clumsy.

“Leave it, Sergeant. Headquarters hasn’t asked about any of this crap yet. I doubt they ever will. I’m thinking of just throwing it out. Or maybe burning it.”

“Captain Smoker!”

Tashigi was aghast. They couldn’t just dispose of the paperwork. There were reasons for all these forms. After all, why would the Navy go to all the trouble of coming up with them? Why would there be triplicate? Smoker was constantly shocking her with his unorthodox methods and violations of procedure. No, this paperwork had to be done. And if he wouldn’t do it, well, then it looked like it was up to her.

Smoker chomped on his cigar, holding back a reply as Tashigi knelt on the floor, collecting the scattered papers. If the girl was that determined he wouldn’t stop her. But there had to be a way to get her to loosen up. She was definitely wound a bit too tightly.

“Um, sir?”

“What is it sergeant?”

“Er, you’re not mad at me, are you sir? I mean, the paperwork has to get done. It says so under code 115, sections 12-36.”

“What are you babbling about? Why would I be mad? It’s you who’s doing the work, not me.”

“Um, well, you said something about a damn woman a moment ago, sir. I hope you don’t mean me sir. If I’m doing something wrong, please tell me. I want to be a help to you sir.”

“No sergeant. It’s not you.” Smoker sighed. The girl did need lots of positive reinforcement, not something he was very good at. “It’s this letter from another marine. I think you met her briefly. Captain Hina.”

“Oh?”

He watched as Tashigi’s eyes seemed to light up at the mention of Hina’s name. He guessed that he shouldn’t be so surprised. There weren’t very many female officers out there, so Hina was bound to have made an impression. The girl was still looking at him, and he wondered what she wanted. Then it hit him. She wanted to know why he’d called Hina a damn woman. Che. Females. Always had to know everything. But it wouldn’t hurt anything to share the letter. And it might distract the sergeant long enough for him to make some of the paperwork disappear.

“Here.”

Smoker got up from behind his desk and walked over to Tashigi.

“Go ahead. You can read it. There’s nothing important or secret in it.”

“O..Okay sir.”

It wasn’t much of a letter; more of a note, really. A few short lines of sharp cursive on regulation letterhead. Tashigi glanced over it. Hina was apparently going to be on patrol in the vicinity. She basically was teasing Smoker for being stuck at a desk job. There was some kind of joke involving cigars and a card game that she didn’t really understand. The letter ended with Hina’s swooping signature and a decidedly un-regulation smear of lipstick. Pink lipstick. The same shade as her hair. Beneath the imprint of Hina’s lips was a small postscript.

‘Don’t torment your new sergeant too much. Try and keep this one around for more than a month. Your assignment could use a woman’s touch.’

Captain Hina thought she could handle this job! What a relief. Tashigi hadn’t been so sure herself. Captain Smoker was all right. Once you got past his rough exterior and dislike of the rules. But all the paperwork was a bit overwhelming. And she’d barely had any contact with the lower ranks. Who knew when or what Smoker intended to do with her regarding them. But Captain Hina seemed to think she could be of use.

Tashigi smiled as she lifted her head from the letter. Yes! She would persevere here. She would find a way to be useful, both to Captain Smoker and for herself. She would be a credit to the Navy and to her post in Loguetown. She looked around for Captain Smoker, wanting to return the letter.

“Sir!”

Smoker stifled a groan. Damn. He was busted. He turned away from the trashcan, fistful of paper clutched in his hands.

“Yes, sergeant?”

“Here’s your letter back sir. Thank you for letting me read it. Let me take those from you sir. I’ll get right back to work on them.”

“You do that.”

Smoker shuffled back behind his desk with the letter. Tashigi certainly seemed to have perked up after reading it. The girl was busily gathering up the rest of the scattered paperwork, murmuring to herself about staying late to try and catch up. Well. Maybe Hina was good for something after all.

He pulled a new cigar out of his pocket and lit up. At least he’d convinced the sergeant that he couldn’t not smoke. After all, it was his very essence. Hmm. Hina had a way of getting contraband. Maybe he should invite her to stop by while she was in the area.

Across the room, Tashigi staggered under her pile of papers. She would get it all done, and show Smoker and Hina both that she had been a good pick. On the floor, one stray form went unnoticed until the sergeant stepped on it. Her feet went out from under her, paperwork scattering once more.

Smoker looked up from the letter he was writing and shook his head. Maybe Hina would have some tips on how to get the sergeant to relax. Or at least some advice on how to keep from laughing at Tashigi’s constant struggles to remain upright.

A/N: Kind of lame, but I like the idea of Hina writing Smoker obnoxious notes. And of course, the awkwardness that would be Tashigi's first months with Smoker. I wasn't going to go chronologically, but that's how it's working out atm. Once again, no revisions. Hence the overall cheesiness.
