It was just too much. Too much to ask but they seemed to understand. Besides, it was Garp’s fault anyway. If he hadn’t demanded this of her, with his threats and his promises and his fists and his smiles, she wouldn’t be forced to bear it. They left, off on their journeys, and she stayed. She hadn’t wanted to raise them, to be the one to watch over them and make sure they were fed and healthy. Mostly she left them to themselves, which was the way Garp preferred it, for it made them strong and more or less self-reliant. But she was there when they needed her, despite the blows and the nasty words, and underneath she knew they had cared for her as much as she had cared for them. It was just too hard to watch them leave the nest – no matter the hundreds of times she’d wished to be free of them – to leave their childhoods and their home and her behind.
