“Oopaa! There. Right over there. I can see it from here.”
“Shanks.” Ben let out an exasperated sigh and tugged him down. “You know you’re not supposed to climb so high anymore.”
“But Be~n, I can’t see from down here.”
Shanks pouted and scuffled his feet through the layer of cedar chips that covered the floor.
“C’mon Ben. Ya know I can handle it.”
Ben just shook his head and tapped one nail on the thick, orange, translucent wall. “I don’t know how you managed to find any holds in this stuff, but I’m not going to take care of you again. Anyway, if you know it’s there, why not just go and get some?”
“Good point!”
Shanks darted over to door. It took a bit of maneuvering, but he managed to get the lock open. “Grooba! You comin’?”
Ben checked the area quickly. No sign of any whiskered marines or any of the giants. “Yes. I’ll watch your back.”
*baddabaddabaddabaddabaddabaddabaddabadda*
They ran across the wide, open expanse, feet fording through the thick greenery all about them. And then they were there, safe, in front of the dark and winding path. Shanks started up determinedly, the uneven sounds of his climbing loud to Ben’s alert, pricked ears. After a few short, tense minutes he heard the telltale crinkling as Shanks reached his prize.
“Better not forget to bring me some,” he muttered from his lookout perch halfway up.
Soon enough Shanks was back and grinning, his cheeks stretched wide and his eyes bright. They didn’t bother to talk, just scampered back to the safety of their home. Shanks immediately went to the area he’d designated as the pantry and deposited most of their spoils. One last tasty treat stayed safely tucked away as he turned towards Ben.
Ben knew this game well and smiled as he reached up to stroke gently along one softly furred cheek. The Honey Nut Cheerio made a slight bulge beneath his paw.
“Don’t forget my kiss!”
Shanks’ voice was hardly distorted at all by the presence of the cereal in his pouch. That ability had always impressed him, along with Shanks’ sheer carrying capacity. No other hamster could cram so much food into so small a space!
*CHU!*
“Hamm-Hamm!” Shanks nuzzled against him for a moment, then offered Ben half of the delicious Cheerio.
*krmp krmp krmp*
Satiated for the moment, Shanks went to curl up in the wad of cotton that formed their nest. Ben could hear the tell-tale *zuzuzu* that meant he’d fallen asleep almost instantly. With a shake of his head and a twitch of his whiskers, the dark hamster went to check the lock. It wouldn’t do for the giants to think they were escaping again.
